ESTATUS EN LA ISLA DE PUERTO RICO/STATUS ON THE ISLAND OF PUERTO RICO
Presencia/Occurence: Presente/Present.

Origen/Origin: Nativo/Native.

/
A rare saprophytic herb at low to middle elevations, primarily between 300 and 800 m, but recent collections are from a narrower elevational band (400-600 m in Axelrod 2011). Major geographic regions following Axelrod (2011): Sierra de Luquillo, Sierra de Cayey, Eastern Cordillera (Cerro La Peña), Western Cordillera, Northern Coastal Lowlands. Botanically unique areas following Axelrod (2011): Cerro La Peña. Apparently extant only in the eastern part of the island. Collected numerous times in and around El Yunque National Forest in the Sierra de Luquillo since at least 1913 (Stevens 2816 NY), including a 2013 voucher (Areces 783 UPRRP) from the El Verde Biological Station (see Estación Biológica El Verde link below). Also collected in the Eastern Cordillera on the slopes and summit of Cerro La Peña, Bayamón, in 1987 (Proctor 42775) and in Patillas in the Sierra de Cayey in 1987 (Taylor 7865 UPRRP); Acevedo-Rodríguez & Strong (2005) also cited a Yabucoa location, which is presumably from the same historical Sierra de Cayey occurrence. Also reported for shaded white sand near sea level at Laguna Tortuguero by Britton & Wilson (1926 [VI(3):340]), which was vouchered in 1924 (Britton 8133 NY); this is presumably the Manatí record cited in Acevedo-Rodríguez & Strong (2005). Another historical location is Maricao, where this was vouchered near Hacienda Chiquita in 1914 (Hess s.n. NY) and at Indiera Fría in 1915 (Britton 4472 NY, US). Although we agree with Acevedo-Rodríguez & Strong (2005) that this is probably more common than records seem to indicate, the known historical trend is a shrinking range, from approximately 3,000 square km to 500 square km.
