General Landscape Uses: Natural wildflower gardens.

Availability: Rarely grown by native plants nurseries in northern Florida.

Description: Perennial herb 3-6 feet tall with hairy stems. Ovate leaves 2-4 inches long, covered in velvety hairs. 5 inch flowers, yellowish fading to pinkish.

Dimensions: Typically 3-6 feet in height.

Range: Southern United States, West Indies, southern Mexico, and northern Central America; apparently rare everywhere in its range except Jamaica.

Habitats: Pinelands.

Soils: Moist, well-drained sandy or limestone soils, without humusy top layer.

Salt Water Tolerance: Low; does not tolerate long-term flooding by salt or brackish water.

Salt Wind Tolerance: Moderate; grows near salt water, but is protected from direct salt spray by other vegetation.

Drought Tolerance: High; does not require any supplemental water once established.

Light Requirements: Full sun to light shade.

Flower Color: Yellowish fading to pinkish

Flower Characteristics: Showy.

Flowering Season: Winter-spring

Horticultural Notes: Can be weedy.
