Description: |

Perennial herb 3-6 feet tall with hairy stems. Ovate leaves 2-4 inches long, covered in velvety hairs. 5 inch flowers, yellowish fading to pinkish. |

Southern United States, West Indies, southern Mexico, and northern Central America; apparently rare everywhere in its range except Jamaica.

Moist, well-drained sandy or limestone soils, without humusy top layer. |

Low; it grows in nutrient poor soils. |
Salt Water Tolerance: |

Low; does not tolerate long-term flooding by salt or brackish water. |
Salt Wind Tolerance: |
|
Moderate; grows near salt water, but is protected from direct salt spray by other vegetation. |

High; does not require any supplemental water once established. |
