Presencia/Occurence: Presuntamente extirpado o extinto/Presumed extirpated or extinct.

Origen/Origin: Presumiblemente nativa/Presumed native.

Historia y distribución/History and distribution: A rare herb collected in 1886 by P.E.E. Sintenis (5441 US) in Naguabo and marked as cultivated. Also reported by Maxon (1926, p. 518) as growing on "rocky banks in partial shade" based on Stevenson 5651 [NY, US], which was collected in 1916 in Rio Piedras. These were also the only specimens known to Proctor (1989). Axelrod (2011) excluded this as cultivated only in Puerto Rico; he did not see the habitat information listed by Maxon on the Stevenson label at US, and it is not on the label either at NY. However, insofar as Puerto Rico is within the known native range of the species and there is a valid historical specimen, we treat here as native and extirpated. This is common in Cuba and has been collected in scattered locations in Hispaniola, twice in Puerto Rico, once in the Virgin Islands (Proctor 1989) and twice in Jamaica (Proctor 1985); it is rare or extirpated everywhere except in Cuba.
