Historia y distribución/History and distribution: Un arbusto o árbol pequeño en el noroeste de Puerto Rico en elevaciones bajas. Principales regiones geográficas conforme a Axelrod (2011): Colinas Calizas del Norte (Arecibo, Isabela). Áreas botánicamente únicas conforme a Axelrod (2011): ninguna.

A rare shrub or small tree in northwestern Puerto Rico at low elevations (<100 m). Major geographic regions following Axelrod (2011): Northern Limestone Hills (Arecibo, Isabela, Aguadilla). Botanically unique areas following Axelrod (2011): none. Originally thought to be limited to the municipality of Isabela, two plants were reported from Río Abajo State Forest in Arecibo, but that population was destroyed by road construction by 1997 (Silander 1997). In 2014, a new population was found by Pedro Acevedo-Rodríguez and J. Knight in Aguadilla (15935 US).

This was listed as a Critical Element by DNER in 1988, 1999 and 2007. It was listed as a species of global conservation concern by the Center for Plant Conservation (1992), who ranked it as a priority A species (a taxon at risk of global extinction within 5 years), and it was ranked as Endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1994. It was included as a species known from three or fewer locations in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by Figueroa Colon & Woodbury (1996) and as a species known from a single locality by Figueroa Colon (1996). In 1998, it was listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. Miller et al. (2012b) gave it a provisional global rank of Critically Endangered using the IUCN Red List criteria, based on 21 trees from one location.
