Native Range:
The West Indies (Cuba, Cayman Islands, Lesser Antilles?) and possibly Cental America and northern South America. Cultivated and assumed naturalized in the Bahamas (Britton & Millspaugh 1920), Bermuda, Jamaica and Venezeula.

History in the Bahamas:
Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh as being introduced from Cuba and spreading from cultivation on New Providence and on Grand Turk. Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 327, 329) for grasslands, shallow soil on rock flats and open sandy soils nearly throughout the Archipelago (regions 10-7, 5, 2-1).
