History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for gardens in the Bahamas and perhaps native somewhere in the Archipelago. Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 326-327) for gardens in New Providence and Eleuthera (region 8); may be expected to be naturalized. Z. cardinalis C.H. Wright was described based on material collected on New Providence (see Freid et al. 2014), but Correll & Correll and others place that name into synonym here.
