Native Range: Old World according to Correll & Correll (1982), Acevedo-Rodríguez (1996), the Flora of the West Indies (Acevedo-Rodríguez & Strong 2015) and others. Native to the West Indies, and southwestern North America to Brazil according to PLANTS and others. Originally described from Hispaniola, but widespread in Africa (see GBIF.org).

History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for sandy fields in the Turks and Caicos (Grand Turk, Ambergris Cay).
