Native Range: The West Indies, southern Mexico (Yucatan Peninsula) and Central America (Belize, Bay Islands of Honduras).

History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for shrublands and coppices nearly throughout the Archipelago. Three species were recognized (1) P. obtusa for shrublands and coppices from Grand Bahama, Abaco and Andros southeast to San Salvador, the Caicos, Providentales, and Grand Turk; (2) P. bahamensis, from rocky shrublands on Long Cay and the Acklins; and (3) P. inaguensis, from shrublands on Long Cay and Great Inagua. Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 1136-1137, with illustrations) for rocky shrublands and coppices nearly throughout the Archipelago (regions 10-1).
