Native Range:
The West Indies, Mexico, Central America and northern South America. Variety michauxiana is found in the eastern and central United States, Mexico and Central America.

History in the Bahamas:
Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh as an epiphyte on trees, especially in coppices, in the northwestern and southeastern Commonwealth (Abaco, Grand Bahama, Andros, New Providence, Crooked Island). Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 37-39, with illustrations) for on rocks and trees in coppices nearly throughout the Commonwealth (regions 10-8, 5, 3).
