Native Status: Assumed to be Native

Native Range: The West Indies (Lesser Antilles, Greater Antilles, Bahamas), peninsular Florida, Mexico, Central America and South America; introduced to the Old World.

Comments: Although cited as exotic to the West Indies by Acevedo-Rodríguez & Strong (2012, 2016; see also Flora of the West Indies below), Austin (2003) considered variety punctatum, which was the entity cited by Correll & Correll (1982), to be native to the Bahamas and Florida.

Synonyms: Gossypium hirsutum var. punctatum, Gossypium punctatum; Gossypium barbadense of Britton & Millspaugh (1920), not L.
