Notas/Notes: O. antillana es muy similar a O. cubensis del sureste de Cuba y O. ochrocentra del sureste de la Florida. Sin embargo, Lucas Majure (2014 y com. email 2015) cree que estos tres taxones muy probablemente derivan de diferentes grupos de parentales – en el caso de O. antillana, de O. triacantha x O. dillenii [=O. stricta var. dillenii]. Algunos autores tratan O. antillana y O. cubensis como híbridos, pero Majure no lo hace así, y en su lugar las trata tentativamente como especies legítimas derivadas mediante hibridación.

O. antillana is very similar to O. cubensis from southeastern Cuba and O. ochrocentra from southeastern Florida. However, Lucas Majure (2014 and email comm. 2015) believes that these three taxa likely derive from three different sets of parents – in the case of O. antillana, from O. triacantha x O. dillenii [=O. stricta var. dillenii]. Some authors treat O. antillana and O. cubensis as hybrids, but Majure does not, instead tentatively treating them as legitimate species derived through hybridization.

Historia y distribución/History and distribution: Un cactus arbustivo, raro, citado para for Puerto Rico sin localidad por Britton & Rose (1920: 115), y luego por Britton & Wilson (1924 [V(4): 610]), en planicies cerca de la costa sur en las cercanías de Salinas, hacia el oeste. Subsecuentemente citado por Liogier & Martorell (1982), Liogier (1994 [III: 321]) y Liogier & Martorell (2000), básicamente con la misma información. Aunque excluida por Axelrod (2011 como O. cubensis), hay un espécimen en el herbario del New York Botanical Garden recolectado en 1915 por Britton, Cowell y Brown (4746 NY), originalmente etiquetado como O. antillana, y otro recolectado por N.L. Britton & E.G. Britton en 1932 (9857 NY). Lo tratamos como nativo y presunto extirpado en la isla de Puerto Rico. Especímenes recientes atribuidos a este (e.g. Sustache 807) han sido re-determinados como O. repens. No hay registros de esta en MAPR (Jeanine Vélez, com. email 2016).

A rare shrubby cactus cited for Puerto Rico without locality by Britton & Rose (1920: 115), and then by Britton & Wilson (1924 [V(4): 610]), from plains near the southern coast from the vicinity of Salinas, westward. Subsequently cited by Liogier & Martorell (1982), Liogier (1994 [III: 321]) and Liogier & Martorell (2000), basically with the same information. Although excluded by Axelrod (2011 as O. cubensis), there is a specimen at the New York Botanical Garden Herbarium collected in 1915 by Britton, Cowell and Brown (4746 NY), originally labelled as O. antillana, and another collected by N.L. Britton & E.G. Britton in 1932 (9857 NY). We treat this as native and presumed extirpated on the island of Puerto Rico. Recent specimens attributed to this (e.g. Sustache 807) have been re-determined as O. repens. There are no records of this at MAPR (Jeanine Vélez, email comm. 2016).

O. antillana, O. cubensis and O. ochrocentra were all ignored by Hunt (2006), and therefore were not included during the recent IUCN global Red List assessment of the Cactaceae. Recommended for review as a conservation concern in Puerto Rico and globally.
