The lower Florida Keys from the Marquesas northeast to Bahia Honda; West Indies, Mexico (Yucatan peninsula) and Central America (Bay Islands of Honduras).
Habitats:
Coastal hammocks.
Soils:
Moist, well-drained sandy or limestone soils, with humusy top layer.
Nutritional Requirements:
Salt Water Tolerance:
Low; does not tolerate long-term flooding by salt or brackish water.
Salt Wind Tolerance:
Moderate; grows near salt water, but is protected from direct salt spray by other vegetation.
Drought Tolerance:
High; does not require any supplemental water once established.
Light Requirements:
Full sun.

Inconspicuous. Fragrant. Dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants.

Wildlife and Ecology:
Provides significant food and moderate amounts of cover for wildlife. Larval host plant for giant swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes) butterflies.
Horticultural Notes:
Can be grown from seed removed from the outer coating. Scatter seeds over soil and barely cover.

A critically imperiled species in South Florida.
