Availability:
Rarely grown by native plant nurseries.
Description:
Perennial rhizomatous wildflower with stems 4-16 inches long with 1-3 inch leaves. Showy pink or white flowers 1 inch across, with five petals with fringed edges.
Height:
Typically 6-12 inches in height, 2 feet wide.
Growth Rate:
Range:
Georgia and Jackson and Gadsden counties.
Habitats:
Bluff forests.
Soils:
Moist, well-drained sandy soils, with humusy top layer.
Nutritional Requirements:
Moderate; can grow in nutrient poor soils, but needs some organic content to thrive.
Salt Water Tolerance:
Low; does not tolerate flooding by salt or brackish water.
Salt Wind Tolerance:
Low; salt wind may burn the leaves.
Drought Tolerance:
Moderate; generally requires moist soils, but tolerant of short periods of drought once established.
Light Requirements:
Moderate to light shade.
Flower Color:
Pink or white.
