Availability:
	Rarely grown by native plant nurseries.
Description:
	Coarse perennial grass 1.5 feet tall, forming small clumps. Leaves with or without short, red hairs.
Height:
	Typically 1-2 feet in height, up to 3 feet when flowering.
Growth Rate:
Range:
	Eastern half of the United States from Maine west to Texas and south throughout the state of Florida.
Habitats:
	Wetlands, swamps, wet hammocks.
Soils:
	Wet to moist, seasonally inundated organic, sandy or calcareous soils, with or without humusy top layer.
Nutritional Requirements:
	Moderate; can grow in nutrient poor soils, but needs some organic content to thrive.
Salt Water Tolerance:
	Low; does not tolerate long-term flooding by salt or brackish water.
Salt Wind Tolerance:
	Moderate; grows near salt water, but is protected from direct salt spray by other vegetation.
Drought Tolerance:
	Low; requires moist to wet soils and is intolerant of long periods of drought.
Light Requirements:
	Full sun to moderate shade.
Flower Color:
	Green or purplish.
Flower Characteristics:
	Showy.
Flowering Season:
	Summer-fall.
Fruit:
Wildlife and Ecology:
	Larval host plant for clouded skipper (Lerema accius) and Delaware skipper (Anatrytone logan) butterflies.
