IRC's Native Plant Nursery

You finally found the perfect plant for your yard using our Natives for Your Neighborhood website, but now what? You’ve searched all the nurseries you know and you just can’t find it! Frustrating, isn’t it?

At IRC, we are all too aware of this problem. There are so many beautiful and unique plants that are native to our area and perfect for your yard, but that simply are not on the market. As part of our mission to preserve South Florida’s distinctive biodiversity, and as a compliment to our Natives for Your Neighborhood program, we decided to address this deficiency in the native plant market by creating a native plant nursery focused on species that have minimal to no commercial availability.

By providing a source for hard-to-find native plants, IRC’s goal is to leverage your native plant landscaping into an even more powerful conservation tool. Not only will your plantings benefit the planet through habitat creation and resource savings, but also you can literally save individual species by planting rare and uncultivated species native to our area. We often use the plants from our nursery in our habitat restoration projects! We can preserve South Florida’s unique biodiversity one yard at a time, creating connectivity between fragmented natural areas within and around our increasingly urban landscape to benefit plants, animals and our ecosystem.

Check out our current inventory and empower your gardening today!

Don’t forget to look up species you aren’t familiar with on our Natives for Your Neighborhood webpages.

Please note that we also grow species to order so feel free to ask about options if you do not see the species you are looking for on the list.

Logistics
Our nursery is located at our office at 22601 S.W. 152nd Avenue and is open to the public during regular working hours. We recommend calling (305-247-6547) before making a special trip though, as we are primarily a research facility and may not be available to assist you at all times. If you know what you want, we may be able to arrange a pick-up point closer to your home so please call to check if the distance seems daunting. Please also be aware that we only accept cash or checks for payment.

Background & Future Dreams
Nursery construction and propagation of plants started in 2005. Table by table, as funds became available, plants, more tables, ground cloth and irrigation were added to our slowly expanding project. In 2008, we obtained our nursery license and officially opened our doors for business. We view our nursery as a critical component of our conservation effort to restore the link between people and nature, but the endeavor is largely unfunded. For just $9,000 we could more than double the size of our nursery, substantially improve our irrigation system and add a shade house. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please contact Patty at 305-247-6547 or castillo@regionalconservation.org. We would greatly appreciate the support! Likewise, we’re always looking for volunteers to help with various nursery tasks so please contact us if you’d like to put your green thumb to the test!
